Where to Stay in Tangier: Best Areas + Hotels (2026)

Tangier sleeps in three very different cities. The medina — tight white houses on the hill above the port, the legendary Petit Socco, the Café Tingis. The seafront ville nouvelle — wide French boulevards, art deco hotels with the Strait of Gibraltar at their windows. The Malabata cape — resort hotels with pools, 15 minutes east of the centre, where most package tourism stays. Each works for a different traveller.
This guide breaks Tangier into the three areas that matter, with a comparison table and 7 specific hotel picks. Last reviewed May 2026.

Tangier areas compared
| Area | Vibe | Walkability | Price band | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medina & Kasbah | Whitewashed lanes, riads, history | ★★★★★ on foot | €60–250 | Atmosphere lovers, first-timers |
| Seafront & Centre | Art deco, Strait views, classic hotels | ★★★★ walkable to medina | €80–350 | Nostalgia, history, walkers |

Medina & Kasbah — for atmosphere

The Tangier medina is one of the most beautifully positioned in Morocco — perched on the hill above the port, narrow whitewashed lanes opening to sea views from rooftops. Smaller than Marrakech or Fes (1 km across), easier to navigate, but with the same restored-riad atmosphere. The Kasbah quarter at the top of the hill is the most atmospheric.
Nord-Pinus Tanger — design-led Kasbah riad
Five-room riad inside an 18th-century pasha’s palace in the upper Kasbah. Restored by the family behind Nord-Pinus Arles, with museum-grade Moroccan textiles and a roof terrace facing the Strait. The honeymoon choice in Tangier.
Dar Nour — atmospheric medina dar
Six-room maison d’hôtes spread across three connected medina houses, near the Kasbah museum. Library lounge, rooftop with strait views, French-Moroccan owners with deep local knowledge.
Seafront & Centre — for nostalgia

The wide ville nouvelle facing the Strait of Gibraltar is what brought Tangier its 1930s–60s legend — Hemingway, Bowles, Burroughs, Matisse all stayed in the seafront hotels. Today the famous old hotels (El Minzah, Continental) have been restored to their period grandeur. Walking distance to the medina (10 minutes uphill) and the train station (15 minutes).
Hôtel El Minzah — historic luxury benchmark
The grand dame of Tangier hotels (1930). Where Churchill, Bowles and royalty stayed. Andalusian-style courtyard, two pools, traditional spa, four restaurants. Walking distance to medina and seafront.
Hotel Continental — atmospheric old-Tangier
1865 hotel on the medina edge above the port — the oldest continuously-operating hotel in Morocco. Restored period rooms, the famous tile-floored lounge, sea-facing terrace. Atmospheric value.
Malabata cape — for resort feel
The eastern cape, 15 minutes by taxi from the centre, is where most package tourism stays. Pools, beach access, larger rooms, full hotel amenities. The trade-off is that you taxi to every sight in the city. Best if your priority is beach + pool + couples retreat over a city visit.
Hilton Garden Inn Tanger City Centre — modern central
Modern 4-star opposite Tangier-Ville train station. Pool, gym, decent restaurant, soundproofed rooms. Walking distance to seafront and 15 minutes to the medina. The default mid-range business pick.
Mövenpick Hotel & Casino Malabata — full resort
Large beachfront resort on Cap Malabata, 15 minutes east of the centre. Three pools, beach access, spa, casino, multiple restaurants. The choice if you want resort calm and don’t mind taxi-ing to sights.
Mogador Tanger Hotel — solid Malabata mid-range
Mid-range Malabata option with pool, beach access, large rooms. Less polish than Mövenpick but better value. Good for families with kids who want pool time.
Practical booking tips
- Confirm the location — “Tangier” on booking sites covers from the Free Zone (industrial) to Cap Malabata (resort). Look for “Medina,” “Centre Ville,” or specific street names.
- Book in advance for spring/summer — Tangier fills with Spanish weekend visitors and European package tours from May to September.
- Train station distance matters — if arriving by Al-Boraq high-speed line from Casablanca/Rabat (2h), Tangier-Ville station is closer to the centre and walking distance to seafront hotels.
- The medina hill is steep — riads in the upper Kasbah are 10–20 minutes uphill from the nearest taxi access. Pre-arrange transfer if you have heavy luggage.
- Sea views command a premium — most hotels facing the Strait of Gibraltar charge 30–40% more for a sea-view room. Worth it for the “watching the lights of Spain at night” experience.
Pre-book your transfer Tangier Ibn Battouta airport (TNG) or Tangier-Med port (ferries from Spain) to your hotel – fixed price, no taxi haggle.

FAQ — Where to Stay in Tangier
What is the best area to stay in Tangier for first-timers?
The medina or the seafront/centre area. Medina for atmosphere and walking access to the Kasbah; seafront for the classic Tangier feel and easy train access. Both are 10-15 minutes from each other.
Should I stay in Cap Malabata?
Only if your trip is beach-and-pool focused or you’re a couple wanting resort calm. The cape is 15 minutes by taxi from the medina — fine for one direction but tedious for back-and-forth city sightseeing.
Are there boutique riads in the Tangier medina?
Yes — fewer than Marrakech but a good handful in the Kasbah area (Dar Nour, Nord-Pinus, Dar Sultan, La Tangerina). Most under 10 rooms. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for spring/summer.
Can I walk from the train station to my hotel?
Tangier-Ville is 15 minutes’ walk to seafront hotels, 25 minutes to the medina (uphill). Petit taxi is 10–25 MAD. Tangier-Med (the port station, used by ferries from Spain) is 40 km out — taxi or pre-booked transfer needed.
How much does a Tangier hotel cost?
Mid-range 4-star: €100–180/night. Luxury 5-star (El Minzah, Continental restoration): €220–500. Boutique riads in the medina: €80–250. Budget pensions: from €30. Spring/summer rates 30-40% higher than autumn/winter.
